Ethan Hunt has retired from active duty and is engaged to Julia, a nurse who knows nothing about his spy life. When a former trainee is captured, Ethan returns for one last mission. He learns that a dangerous arms dealer, Owen Davian, is trafficking a mysterious object called the Rabbit’s Foot, rumored to be a deadly bioweapon. After a dramatic rescue and intense interrogation sequence on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Davian is captured—but soon escapes, turning the tables on the IMF. He kidnaps Julia, forcing Ethan to betray the agency to get her back. Ethan breaks into the heavily guarded Shanghai tower to retrieve the Rabbit’s Foot and delivers it in exchange for Julia’s life. In the final confrontation, Ethan is injected with an explosive device and must revive himself after stopping Davian. The film ends with Julia now aware of Ethan’s true identity, and the two walk off into a quiet future—at least for now. Directed by J.J. Abrams, MI3 adds emotional depth and personal stakes, grounding Ethan’s character in relationships. It balances spycraft with intense action, establishing a darker, more intimate tone that the franchise would build on moving forward.
