Mission: Impossible (2000)

Ethan Hunt returns to stop a rogue IMF agent, Sean Ambrose, who has stolen a deadly genetically engineered virus called Chimera and its cure, Bellerophon. Ambrose plans to unleash the virus and profit from the resulting chaos by manipulating the pharmaceutical industry. To track Ambrose, Ethan recruits Nyah Nordoff-Hall, a skilled thief and Ambrose’s former lover. As Nyah infiltrates Ambrose’s inner circle, Ethan struggles with both the mission and his growing feelings for her. The story shifts to Australia, where Ambrose prepares to release Chimera unless he receives billions in ransom. Nyah is infected with the virus and prepares to sacrifice herself to stop its spread. In a race against time, Ethan breaks into the facility, retrieves the cure, and defeats Ambrose in a brutal beachside fight. He saves Nyah and stops the outbreak. Directed by John Woo, MI2 leans heavily into stylized action, slow-motion gunfights, and motorcycle stunts, giving the franchise a more romantic and operatic tone. Though the most stylistically different of the series, it sets up Ethan as a more emotionally complex character and introduces the idea of personal sacrifice tied to global stakes.
